25 Sep Top Free Video Screen Recording Tools (Updated 2022)
Because of the pandemic and changes in the workplace, there has been a seismic shift to working remotely.
We’ve seen many excellent tools becoming available to help remote employees with this transition.
We already covered a few popular apps in our list of tools for remote working. Some of these include video conferencing like Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet, and project management apps including ClickUp, Trello, Asana, and many others.
For this article, we’ll focus on free apps for capturing video from your screen.
There are many benefits of using video for communicating. You can use screen recording apps to provide instructions for clients and co-workers, create tutorials, explain how things work, record webinars and online meetings, and much more.
These apps work either as desktop apps or browser extensions. Browser extensions can be used regardless of what operating system you use. This means you don’t need to download anything and browser-based screen capture tools work on both Windows and Macs. (For this post we only list Chrome extensions).
You’d be amazed how much time you can save and at the same time improve your communication process when you use video tools.
Below is the list of the most popular video screen recording tools.
Top Free Video Screen Recording Apps
Loom – This is probably my favorite and the easiest one to use. They have both the desktop app and browser extension. You can record up to 15 minutes of video using the free account. After you finish recording, you can share the video with a link. Loom stores videos you make on their site so as long as you keep the video, the link will work. – The free account allows you to record and store up to 25 videos. You can also trim the parts of the video you don’t want to include when you’re done.
(Download Chrome Extension)
Screecast-Matic – Similar to Loom, Screencast can be used either as a browser extension or a desktop app. One nice feature that Screencast-Matic has is that it allows you to select what part of the screen you want to record. Other features include zoom while recording, easily publishing to YouTube or sharing with a link. If you want to upgrade, the paid plan is only $4/month.
Tiny Take – This is another free screen capture & video recording software for Microsoft Windows & Mac. With TinyTake, you can capture videos of your computer screen, and share them with others in minutes. Keep in mind that only a premium account allows you to add annotations to your videos.
Free Cam – Free screen recording is Window only based app. You can select the recording area and upload your videos to YouTube. The app includes features to let you edit the video before publishing. You can also edit your video.
Screencastify – Browser Extension – Unlike other screen recording apps on this list, this is only a browser extension for Chrome. It’s easy to install and use. You can also edit the videos before sharing them. Keep in mind, the videos recorded using Screencastify can only be saved and shared through Google Drive. The video limit for a free account is 5 min
Bonus: IceCream Apps Screen Recorder – Windows only.
Icecream Screen Recorder is another easy-to-use free screen recording software that enables you to record any area of your screen or save it as a screenshot. This tool is part of a set of free tools offered by Icecream Apps. Free account limits to 5 min of recording.
Try recording a simple 2-3 minute explainer video instead of writing a long email, and see for yourself how much time you can save.
