A business without a website is not a business, it’s a hobby. If the company wants to stay competitive, it must have a professional-looking website.
Once you decided that it’s time for your business to get a website, the next important decision you must make is how to achieve this goal.
You have a number of options when it comes to building your company website. If you have a very small budget and not afraid to learn new technology, you can try to build the website yourself. The other option you might want to consider is hiring a web designer or a design agency that will work with you to build you a custom website.
As with any business decision, you have to do a cost-benefit analysis. You have to decide if you are willing to invest numerous hours to learn design principles and teach yourself how to code.
Building a website can be a huge time investment, especially for someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience or technical skills in this area. I’ve always wondered why so many business owners choose to focus their energy on building websites themselves when they have absolutely no knowledge or skills required for this.
As a business owner, you’re an expert in managing your own business. You know exactly what it takes to run. Instead of wasting your valuable time learning how to code, you’re much better off finding an experienced designer who can do a much better job. Hiring a web designer, will not only save you hours of frustration but will also likely result in a better, more effective website.
Should I hire a web designer?
If you worry about the cost, consider hiring a freelancer, rather than an agency. Freelance web designers have much lower overhead and are usually less expensive than a typical web design agency. There are many talented web designers and developers who can build an amazing website for you at a fraction of what a big agency would cost. The best way to find a freelancer is to ask around and get recommendations from other businesses. If you can’t locate one this way, you can always look online on sites such as craigslist, Upwork, and indeed. You can select one based on their work history, their ratings, and feedback they received from their previous jobs.
Should I design the website myself?
If you insist on building the website yourself, you can roll up your sleeves and teach yourself how to code and design. This might take you some time and if you are not computer or tech-savvy, it will be a daunting task. At the very least, you will need to learn about website hosting, CSS, HTML.
The other easier path you can take is to use WordPress theme and either has someone install it or try to install it yourself. Installing a theme will allow you to have a well-designed website and with few modifications, you can customize it to fit your needs.
Another option you might want to consider is using a website builder. Website builders are basically online tools that help you create a website without coding skills, using drag and drop technology.

If you have a small business, often a simple website developed using one of these builders might be all you need. But as your business grows, you would be far better served to find an experienced designer who can create a more professional website for your business.
Based on my experience designing websites for many years, I think WordPress is the best choice when it comes to building a small business website. WordPress allows you to scale your website, migrate it to another hosting provider and add all types of plugins to expand your website functionality. Also using a pre-built WordPress template can drastically reduce the time and the cost of the development. However, make sure to use the self-hosted WordPress you download from WordPress.org, and not the WordPress.com hosting platform.
